Martin Hardie (1875-1952) studied etching with Sir Frank Short of the Royal College of Art, and exhibited his own etchings and water colors at the Royal Academy by 1908. He wrote many books, including (1906), (1921), and a three-volume history of British water color painting. The collection consists of about 3500 pieces of correspondence, written mostly by English artists to Martin Hardie, while an artist and Keeper of the Paintings and head of the department of engraving, illustration and design in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
